Service = 3 stars Food= 3 stars Ambiance= 3 stars wait for reserved table = 2 stars My family really enjoyed Cafe 2. I was pleasantly surprised at the tastiness of our food. My husband's pasta was excellent and my pork chop was alright. Others had the filet mignon and seafood scampi. My mother-in-laws haddock was by far the best dish. I am upset I did not order it since it said "horseradish covered" and I hate horseradish, but it did not have an overwhelming horseradish taste. It was perfectly fried and very yummy. I had one of the best seats which gave a clear view of the kitchen line and I have to say the chefs are handling their business. Also, it was not overtaxed or expensive as I have read in other reviews. The prices reflect the food and service, which were great. I plan to return next time I am on the island.

Outdoor seating is basically right at the sidewalk downtown, yet feels comfortable with just a few plants serving as a boundary. I sat outside and got the turkey salad on whole wheat pita for lunch. It was huge! Most of the filling was actually salad vegetables though and so it wasn't heavy in the stomach, very healthy and tasted nice too. They served it with a little vinagrette on the side which was a nice touch.

Fresh flavorful food, amazing desserts (blueberry bread pudding with whiskey sauce!!!!), great espresso, cute outdoor seating area. What's not to love?

My family and I have enjoyed many wonderful breakfasts here. Their menu has a great variety of flavors, and offerings to satisfy all tastes. The staff is very pleasant and attentive, and add to this perfect start of the day.

This place has been a traditional favorite of ours for years when we visit this area. The food, we usually get breakfast, has always been very good. The service has never been great but this year it was so appalling, on two consecutive visits, that we will not be going back. We brought our adult kids here, hoping they'd enjoy breakfast as much as we had in the past. All of us have worked in the restaurant business in the past and are always extra patient and respectful of servers. The server was so irritated with us for asking him to correct an order he got wrong that I actually told him his behavior was inappropriate. The food, as I said, is pretty good. If you can put up with the server having audible tantrums and waiting a long time for service, you'll enjoy the food. We still left a decent tip because I don't have the heart not to. My hope is that the two servers find jobs they actually enjoy and the positions get filled by people who match the quality of food prepared by someone in the back of the house that cares a lot about people's experience. Until then, we won't be going back.

Excellent dinner! Almost passed it by due to the name. Luckily we stopped and sat outside in their sweet patio with live music. We had seafood scampi and crabcakes with root vegetables and asparagus. Both terrific. Highly recommend!

Wow. What a disappointment. I was pre-warned that the service was terrible, but told that the food was good and worth a (lot longer that usually) wait. I was with a group of friends and family, sitting outside. Sunday, August 30th 2015: 80 degrees and sunny, humid. I was in a group of 5 The restaurant was not busy - no wait - easily more than half empty. The sign said "seat yourself". Most tables are for 2-4 patrons. I immediately noticed that our server did not like us. He was irritable and inconsiderate. It took so long to just get our orders in.. We ordered drinks and food together because it took well over 30 minutes to get any attention. I was a waitress in college, so I try to be understanding when I go out to eat. After all this, I was really expecting good food. 15-20 minutes - we get drinks! Woo! Honey lemonade was unique but ... I didn't even drink half - perhaps just not for me. My friend got the "intoxicating chai tea". At the bottom of her cup she found brown sludge that looked like diarrhea... Make sure to stir the chai tea. When we ordered food, I asked for the primavera omelette - requested egg whites. I have a degree in nutrition science (I like to avoid cholesterol) and this is a habitual order for me. I was the only one to order egg whites. The server made a mistake and gave my friend egg whites too, which she did not order.... Then he argued with her! "YOU ORDERED THE EGG WHITES" took the plate, tossed it at the outdoor bar and dramatically sighed. Other costumers even saw this. After that, I simply didn't want to be there. 'Uncomfortable' doesn't even describe it. His anger was frightening. I felt embarrassed. I just want to know why he treated us in such a degrading manner. My omelette was in a puddle of oil. The food I received wasn't worth it. I cannot recommend this place to anyone, I would feel terrible if this happened to anyone else. It took a while to get the check & leave. I really wanted to get out of there. PROs: My boyfriend's blueberry pancakes were delicious. The other orders at my table looked very appetizing... The tri-fecta was well liked. The mushrooms in my omelette were beautiful and the other vegetables were comme ci, comme ça. In the end, It wasn't worth the distress.

i wish i could give negative stars. this was the worst restaurant experience i have ever had in my entire life. a week later, and i a still stunned that my boyfriend and i were treated as horribly as we were!!! let me set the scene.....it was an hour before they closed for lunch, we were the only ones there. we had just come back from a hike so planned on taking a pita home with us. the woman at the counter was unreasonably rude, and pointed to the menu when we asked a question, instead of just answering. me: oh, so what kind of sauce is there? her: sighs, says nothing, points at menu. you get the drift. so we order a pita to share (again, girl behind counter visibly annoyed) and a beer to share while we wait. me: can we get one of the stouts to share? her: sighs, says nothing, points at cooler. didnt even offer us glasses, we literally shared the bottle. as we are drinking our beer, the girl behind the counteer complains to the waiter that we didn't even tip her. (ok, so now i know she can at least talk, and why the hell would i have tipped her? ) the pita comes out in a to go bag, and since we still had some beer left, and since i was ravenous having waited until 3pm for lunch, we started to eat the sandwich at the table. in a completely empty restaurant that was still open for another hour. now this is where it gets good......the waiter came over and began arguing that we weren't allowed to eat at the table since we had ordered the food to go. i thought he was joking until he point blank said you need to leave. as for the pita itself, the bread was dry and cold, and the sauce/dressing wasn't on the pita, it was served on the side. would have been so much better mixed with the veggies, or on the pita before filling it. there are plenty of places to eat, go somewhere else. based on what i observed, they won't be around long anyways,,,,,

Such a relief to find vegetarian food. We had the vegetable pita and it was fresh! Don't forget to order the house fries. They were to die for! Service was great and the setting perfect!

Perfect breakfast spot with plenty of variety: omelets, pancakes, French toast, bagels, oatmeal. Stuffed French toast and blueberry pancakes are delicious!!! It's also a nice place for dinner. Stayed in Bass Harbor just after Labor Day, they had a delicious butternut apple crisp soup, seasonal but oh so yummy. Smoked salmon omelet and crab cakes yummy as well. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Also have to go options, in case you decide to take a long hike and want to take something with you!!! :)

We had the French toast Cinnamon roll. Great invention. The server staff seemed new but the owner was on top of everything . Nice place for breakfast . if we had more time we would have come back for lunch.

Our server was perfectly nice, doing the best she could with a pretty rude crowd on her own. Cold coffee and chowder. Pita was certainly stuffed, but mostly with veggies and very dry chicken. Was recommended this by a frequenter so disappointed.

We travel a lot and this is one of our favorite restaurants! During our week in Southwest Harbor we ate breakfast here 4 times and dinner twice! Everything we had was great. It has a relaxing eclectic environment. I would describe it as casual gourmet. My favorites were the Summer Scramble, stuffed tripleberry french toast and the filet stuffed with lobster.

The food is good here. Great Clam Chowder. Good burger. You can sit outside and listen to some music too. This is a good place to eat. Nothing fancy, the place insn't about fine dining. But it is about unique ways to present food. Good food at a good price presented with a slightly different spin. I would recommend eating here. My favorite Southwest Harbor place to eat.

everything here was amazing recently moved here and some neighbors said that this place was a good restaurant. I had an amazing spicy tuna roll for an appetizer and it was very, very good. The tuna was very fresh and the seaweed salad went perfectly with the six nice sized rolls you are given. I also had the lobster fondue. It's an appetizer but it was the perfect size for an entree. It was a bowl of hot melted cheese and full of lobster meat. There were full claws in there as well as a lot of other lobster meat. It was the best fondue I've ever had. To finish things off I had the chocolate mouse for dessert. It was a nice scoop of the most rich and think chocolate pudding I've ever had. It would have been way to rich with just that. However they put a scoop of homemade whipped cream next to it. The two combined complemented each other amazingly. This place is by far the best restaurant I've ever been to here. Maybe even better than sips, a restaurant right down the street which is pretty epic. I recommend this place 13629472%.

I don't know how Eat a Pita is for breakfast and lunch but we had dinner at Cafe 2 last night and found the menu pretentious, especially given the blah food and the overtaxed service. It is possible that the food is better for omnivores but we had five vegetarian items and none of the four of us liked any of them. Poorly seasoned and cooked without evident skill. That said, the outdoor seating area is very pleasant, with lots of flowering plants. This could be a very nice restaurant if it had better food.

  • Sharon C.

Breakfast was not good. Spanish omelette did not have choricio in it, it had another kind of sausage and the salsa dumped on top was so runny that it made the whole omelette a watery mess. Also, it seems the eggs were whipped with a very heavy hand, they were not fluffy but very heavy and dense. My daughter had basic eggs, bacon, home fries, and a pancake. I don,'t know how you could mess that up but she only ate the pancake. The eggs were not good and the home fries were soggy. Maybe stick with the pancakes and French toast if you find yourself here....

I'm so over this place. I just moved into town and it's a pretty spot to walk to and get a bite to eat. I've never had an issue with the actual food, both the lunch and dinner menu are nice. The service just SUCKS. There have been several times when we have rolled up and had to wait 10+ minutes at the sign that asks you to wait to be seated before someone finally seats us. A couple of times we got fed up and just sat ourselves on the patio. The last time I was there I didn't realize that they didn't open for dinner for another half hour. Again, we stood at that little sign waiting for someone. Several times two members of the wait staff who were just standing around talking to eachother clearly looked at us and just turned away. Oh, and when you do, if ever, get seated, the service is slow. It's such a shame because the food is very nice and the place is cute. The only time I've had good service was the two times a woman served us whom I believe was Polish. She was very friendly.

We had a miserable dinner at Cafe 2 last night. There were long waits at every turn (20 minutes to order, 40 minutes for food, and 20 minutes to pay out) and the food was mediocre at best. Salad vegetables were wilted, chicken was overcooked, the mustard jar that was delivered to the table had black gunk around the opening, and pastas were greasy. The level of dysfunction, lack of teamwork, and inattention to detail was hard to watch. When an entree salad was delivered without dressing, the waitress shrugged and then begrudgingly brought a plastic cup containing about a tablespoon of dressing. I would have told a manager if it had appeared that anyone cared or wanted to admit he or she was in charge. Count us out.

Had breakfast here earlier this week- I had the southwest omelette and my husband had eggs and pancakes- both very good! Our waiter was great- good service considering he was waiting on the entire patio. We couldn't wait to go back for lunch - too bad it didn't measure up to breakfast. The curry chicken salad was tasty and ingredients were fresh but the pita needed something a little more and my Greek salad was so so. Overall, I'd say breakfast is the go to meal at this place!

Gross. Go to Jay Dubs. Wait staff is so slow it is insulting. Rude Russian waitress that could not be bothered to even be there, let alone take our order. Nasty honey lemonade. It was as if someone squeezed lemons in a cup. 8 sugar packets and it was still nasty. Food was absolutely disgusting. I don't know how they are still there. Like others posted on here, we had to leave our table, go inside and demand our food several times and demand our bill. DON"T GO THERE! Go to a place that values your business and serves good food.

I dined in the evening and thus enjoyed my time at Cafe 2. We opted to sit outside, but with the impending storm moving in we ended up moving under the cover by the bar. The service was a little slow, but I'll blame that on the fact that each dish is prepared when ordered. There is even a warning on the menu warning about this. Our conversation flowed freely and our glasses were never empty. I ended up getting the pan roasted pork loin. It was wonderfully prepared and topped with a Merlot-blackberry sauce and Granny Smith apple chips, served with a polenta cake and asparagus. The sauce was tasty, and the apple chips added a nice touch to the pork. I found myself wanting more of the chips, but that was because they were so delicious and not because I didn't have enough. I'd go back without hesitation the next time I am in Southwest Harbor.

Update. 2013. Meh. They need to step it up! Marinara sauce is ok but don't put on overcooked pasta. Meatballs are just mediocre. They are simple to make and almost never a miss. Need more flava!!!!!!

I had breakfast at Eat-a-Pita twice while staying in Southwest Harbor. The food is delicious, but the service was totally lacking. The female waitress we had during our first visit was horrendous - we ordered bottomless cups of coffee, but she ignored us so we weren't able to get refills! Even after chasing her down to request refills, she took her sweeeet time. The male waiter we had the second time we visited was better, but still wasn't the best server. However, the food was stinkin delicious. If you go, you HAVE to eat the Cadillac Mountain Special - it's potatoes, eggs, onions, etc. We had avocados added to it - totally recommend it! Definitely enough to share between two people.

We went to Cafe 2 portion of Eat-a-Pita. I enjoyed it very much! The clam chowder was tops.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Went for dinner last night and read about slow service, so I was expecting that. Our waitress was friendly, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. We ordered the Bruschetta dip, which was very tasty. My fiancé ordered the scallops. They were decent, but not exceptional. I ordered the special for the evening, seafood lasagna. The sauce was good, but overall the dish tasted a bit too fishy (not the good crab, shrimp & lobster i was expecting). Later in the evening I was very ill!! I definitely attribute it to my dinner. Don't think I could go back.

Nice place! Food was pretty yummy, although I wouldn't go with the lobster fondue. Service was good and the patio was lovely.

  • Christa H.

Very disappointed by the service. We waited for ten minutes at the "please wait to be seated" sign as staff walked past us before another patron told us the hostess was on the other side if the patio. Waited there for another 5-7 min as the staff continued to ignore us. I finally asked the bartender at the outdoor bar how to get a table. She sharply told me that all the tables were full and they would not be seating anyone. This was at 730 on a Friday. I wish I could comment on the food, but the behavior of the staff speaks volumes about how much they care about customers.

Had an absolutely wonderful breakfast here with my daughter and friend after hiking Cadillac Mountain. Very fresh food entrees with lots of variety and healthy choices. We had stuffed french toast with blueberries and it was delicious. The service was excellent and the ability to eat outside was a plus. Yes, a bit pricey but it was a special meal to have with my daughter and very much enjoyed :-)

My wife and I ate here on our honeymoon for dinner one night. We both had burgers which were delicious. For dessert, my wife got the blueberry pie and I got the blueberry bread pudding. The pie was good but the blueberry bread pudding was AMAZING! The staff was nice and while the food took awhile, it was worth the wait. We would definitely recommend this place!

Very delighted we found this eating establishment in SW Harbor. The ratatouille with the tuna was noteworthy. Good value for the money. The suggested wine pairings were spot on. Also the polenta with the haddock was tasty and a real plus. This was our best dining experience in SW Harbor.

It was very SLOW. Food was fine, although pita sandwich was not that exciting unless you're really into shredded carrot. Not a reasonable wait time for casual lunch spot. Nice atmosphere but don't visit unless you want a very leisurely lunch.

Eat-a-Pita is a pretty good way to start your day. Featuring the usual breakfast fare, coupled with occasional specials, this place has something for everyone. The French toast was fairly good, though slightly on the soggy side. Pancakes were well done - not too sweet and loaded with berries. They also had a nice lemony aftertaste. The smoked salmon bagel was loaded with fish. My only complaint was that the coffee tasted like generic diner coffee. I would have expected better quality.

Food was excellent, but the service was shocklingly slow. 15 minutes to get menus, nearly 30 minutes to get food. We had the smoked trout omelet which was really delicious, but we were so hungry by the time it came I probably would have eaten fried shoe leather. Fine if you're okay to wait for a while, but if you're in a hurry definitely try someplace else.

In the past this was a good spot, but not anymore. Paid $23.00+ for two sandwiches to take to the seawall for lunch (6 miles away) only to discover they were loaded with vegetables and missing the bacon, and avocado on one and the avocado and turkey on the other. Drove back to the store and spoke to the manager. He could have cared less. His staff is composed of slovakian summer workers that spoke broken English. Although they tried to be helpful, they weren't really trained. But the disturbing thing was the owners attitude. Never again.

Stumbled upon this place while checking out the cute downtown scene of Southwest Harbor. The outdoor seating area was perfect on a warm summer day. I was thrilled to see a young girl (cook?) collecting herbs that they grow within their own pots!... rosemary, thyme, etc. The vegetarian chili was amazing and so was the turkey pita. Everything tasted amazingly fresh and was a huge relief from the so-so meals we had previously in the area. Huge portions, affordable prices, and a great local beer selection - you really can't go wrong. My only regret is that I didn't try any of the fresh baked desserts!

A lovely little cafe in beautiful Southwest Harbor. The salads are amazing loaded with fresh veggies and the homemade dressings are delish. I got the Greek salad with chicken which comes with lettuce, carrots, scallions, tomato, red onion, chick peas, cukes, peppers, feta and olives. Basically every salad and sandwiches comes with these fixins. YUM And if you are not the veggie eating kind i.e. my BF, they make a killer grilled ham and cheese. I also some great looking pita's coming out stuff to the brim with meats and veggies. The outdoor seating area is filled with flowers, makes you feel like are eating a garden or flower shop. Just writing about makes me hungry...perhaps I will stop in again tomorrow.

What a shame about this place. In some ways, it's the best restaurant in Southwest Harbor. In others, it's just maddening. On this year's trip to Acadia, I had two meals here; one lunch and one dinner. We usually stop here at least 3 or 4 times during a our yearly week-long trip, but this year they really turned me off. Lunch - I ordered the soup of the day (carrot and ginger) and a lamb burger. The soup was thicker than gravy, somewhere between a loose polenta and mashed potatoes, and in my opinion was too sweet and over-spiced with pumpkin-pie-like flavors (clove / cinnamon / allspice / etc.). It might have been well received as a vegan Christmas pudding, but was hard to eat as a starter on a warm summer day. My lamb burger (ordered medium rare) was blue; completely raw in the center. I almost never send food back, but I had to in this case. What I got back was the SAME PATTY (my first bite was still missing) cooked to well-done and placed on a new roll. To me, that says, "GO ____ YOURSELF". Aside from the execution problems, the feta "relish" that was spread on the burger completely masked everything else. Overall, a lousy meal, and it irked me to pay for it. On the upside, the chowder my wife had was very good. Dinner - Based on some good experiences in the past (and the fact that nobody else in town was open during the Holiday), we gave the place another shot for dinner. My wife had a delicious lobster salad (like a lobster roll served on green salad instead of a bun) and I had a pretty good turkey burger and really tasty black bean soup (although I did have to pull 2 whole bay leaves out of it). In general, everything was fine. Nothing spectacular, but very good, particularly in comparison with the other restaurants in Southwest. Even the service was good, up until we were settling up the check. I have a bad habit of just paying without checking the itemized receipt, but because we were splitting the check between two parties, I had to go through and tally up what each had ordered. I noticed that we had been charged for an additional beer (5 instead of 4) and an entire entree that nobody had ordered. When I raised it to the waitress' attention, she immediately took off the charges and said that she had accidentally added our ticket to one that was already open from another customer. Now, I will never be able to prove that she was a lying thief, but it seems odd to me that at approximately the same time as we were ordering, somebody else ordered a single Smuttynose IPA (just happened to be the same beer we were drinking) and an adult portion of spaghetti with meatballs (which just happened to be the same as the kid's meal my daughter was eating). Seems far more likely that she just tacked on an extra beer and added an entree that looked - at a glance - like what we had ordered for our daughter (and both my daughter's kid-portion and the adult portion were on the tab). That's really sleazy. It was about a $20-25 overcharge on what should have been a $70 check. The owner was standing right next to our table as we were discussing it, and she didn't say a word. As I said, it's maddening, because among SW Harbor restaurants, there really aren't any competitors with healthy, contemporary menus and the food is usually quite good. In past years, there was usually a hiccup or two over the week (e.g., maybe we'd get one phenomenally bad waitress, or we'd hit them when the kitchen is backed up and have to wait for an hour, etc.), but overall, it was forgivable, isolated stuff. I don't think I'm going to forgive this time.

We were able to experience lunch and dinner. Both meals had a great presentation, but had a very bland flavor. The atmosphere was wonderful and the service was also very good. I will most likely not return, but I am happy that I gave it a try.

This was our first time in Southwest Harbor and we were drawn in by the outdoor patio which was nice, however the food was not that great. I had the seafood pasta and it was watery with not much flavor. The scallops were rubber but the lobster was good. My husband had the salmon. He will usually eat anything, but sadly he could not get through this dish. The rice was bland and tasted old, and the salmon had this thick sauce on it that was just too much. The worst part was the salmon was completely full of bones making it not eatable. To top it off the prices were quite high for the quality of food. I will pay for a good meal, but this was not even close. Luckily our waitress took the salmon off our bill. We will not be back to this place.

We stopped in on our way around the island doing some exploring. It's a nice casual lunch spot - they have a great selection of healthy stuffed pitas, sandwiches and paninis. The waitress was very friendly and pointed out some hidden local spots for us to check out too.

Decent veggie chili, though by no means spicy. A few vegan options. Service is fine- not fantastic and not as horrible as others wrote. On a drizziling cool day, it was nice people watching, and warm bowl of goodness

Ate here today with my husband and infant daughter. We ordered the whipped feta among other things and when it came to the table it looked like it could possibly have nuts which both my husband and nursing infant are allergic to. Instead of eating it, we asked the waitress who emphatically stated there were no nuts in the dip. We then started to eat it and my husband began to have the beginnings of a reaction. I then went into the restaurant from the patio, found the waitress and asked again. She strongly said no again but I asked her to ask the cook. She came back and said, "oh, it has walnuts and pine nuts but it says that on the menu!" The menu was right there so I showed her that no it didn't. They were ridiculously unhelpful and even had the cojones to ask us to pay for part of our meal. Please do not eat here if you have any food allergies or sensitivities (or don't like really rude and inconsiderate staff...). Not to mention that the food we did eat was very mediocre and the waitress was pretty gruff (and not in a charming way) from the moment we sat down. There are much better choices in the area!

Been here twice. Food is mediocre. Nothing amazing or great. I ordered a burger with bacon and cheese. Little did I know that they used turkey bacon without telling me. Also no fries... really no fries? This is 2010. Get some damn fries guys. The service the first time was fine but the second time was horrendous. Keep walking if you see this place.

The service is very slow! Be prepared for this. When we were done, we ended up going inside to the counter to pay because the waitress disappeared and we were left waiting and waiting. That said, the clam chowder is very good. Chunky, lots of clam flavor. The lobster bisque is "okay" on a island with really good lobster bisque available. The lobster Reuben is very good and I've looking forward to coming back for one since last year. The lobster BLT is also good. A different take on a standard. Both came with potato salad as they were out of coleslaw.

We stopped in for lunch in between hiking trails in Acadia NP. There were two signs (one inside and one out) telling us to wait to be seated so we weren't sure where to wait. There is a separate area for takeout orders and we weren't sure where to stand to be noticed. Eventually a waitress found us and promptly told us to "sit anywhere". This always annoys me because I have been waiting patiently for these inane instructions. On to the food: Yum! I had a honey lemonade with soda water that was excellent and refreshing. I then had the gazpacho and a turkey apple celery pita. The pita was stuffed with so any veggies I ended up eating half of it with a fork after it fell out of the pita. That wasn't the problem, though. The menu made sure to mention that the meats were organic and hormone-free, etc. But in our lunch for 2 we used 4 plastic cups and straws (2 drinks and 2 waters) and my pita came in a basket with a cardboard insert and a paper wrap around it with a plastic fork. I saw salads arriving at other tables also in disposable serving pieces. Now I know they do take out but there is a full service dining area with tables inside and out. It is enough of a restaurant to have a full kitchen complete with dishwasher. Paper and cardboard products used for food are not recyclable and plastic #5 (the kind used in our drink cups) is not recyclable on the island. I don't like the idea of using that much environmentally unfriendly material just for a little convenience. For a restaurant focusing so heavily in veggies and promoting organic meats it was surprising that their serving pieces were paper and plastic. As mentioned in another review, it's now called Eat-A-Pita and Cafe 2.

On a local friend's recommendation, my honey and I had dinner here after an October afternoon of fun at the Southwest Harbor Oktoberfest. The cafe is quite charming and delightful... It's definitely a step above what you would normally consider a cafe. Fresh and elegant.... and the decor is as interesting as the food. Small update: It's now called Eat-A-Pita & Cafe 2.

Wonderful restaurant! The staff was absolutely fabulous as we were dining with a very tired toddler. The meal was fantastic!

Cafe 2 and Eat-A-Pita are a great joint venture. The food and service are excellent, but variety is somewhat lacking for meal options (especially for the vegetarians amongst us). The staff is happy to answer questions about the food, though, and will help you find something you like. Great environment and location, too. Can't recommend enough as a solid option for all meals in Southwest Harbor.
